Legislative Proposals for Allied Health Recognizing a looming shortage in allied health professionals over the coming years, Members of Congress have introduced proposals to promote, attract, and retain quality individuals to careers in allied health. There are approximately 30 bills pending in the U.S. House and Senate that include provisions regarding the education and training of allied health professionals, many of which address subjects far afield from traditional higher education issues. These pieces of legislation drive both the rules and regulations that govern how care is given in allied health professions and eligibility for federal grants to the allied health industry. Unfortunately, the proprietary allied health sector remains unaware of these bills, and uninformed on the ways which legislative activity could impact an institution’s curriculum, enrollments, funding, and competitive positioning within the higher education community.
